Riley Alexander Caple died by suicide on September 25, 2023. He was found after a cryptic phone call to his ex in his civic on the side of the road, with a gunshot wound to his head. After being revived on the way to the hospital, he eventually passed away around 5:45pm.
Riley was struggling with depression and anxiety. Trying to get a good medication routine but also self-medicating the way some teenagers do with alcohol and drugs. He was the protector of his group, always sticking up for the little guy, or picked on friend. He would use his job at Jersey Mikes to take food to kids in his school who had nothing at home, and the only time they ate was at school, when people would give them food. He was a servant at heart and one of the greatest 17 years olds there ever was.
Riley loved cars and going fast, so much so he was born weeks early, it didn’t help that dad was a speed demon on Fort Hood trying to get to the military hospital while serving. His first and favorite car was “Casper” a 2011 Subaru WRX that was mostly stock, except for the Cobb turbo back exhaust system. Problem is he blew the transmission twice, as an underground street racer. There is even an audio clip of him saying he’s currently speeding, on the way to the courthouse to pay a speeding ticket, on the road he got the ticket! So, we sold that and he then got his civic. He loved all cars and thus the reason for the name and logo.
We were crushed and have been ever since.
We decided we didn’t want anyone one else to have to go thru what we did and started our non-profit Revving For Riley (www.revvingforriley.org). With that we hosted a memorial car show on what would have been his 18th birthday March 2, 2024, and were blown away at the response. We were able to raise just over $7,000 our first year and donated it all to The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
The biggest program we are starting is a no-fee counseling/medical session, as that is sometimes the reason folks decide on the life ending choice. We have a local partner that has agreed to meet with us to start that conversation. We also want to get other teenagers to share their survival stories and connect with others on their journey.
Always remember that #YOUMATTER #YOUARELOVED please #STAY because #TOMORROWNEEDSYOU
